A root elevator is a dental surgical instrument used primarily for the extraction of teeth. Its purpose is to loosen a tooth or its roots from the surrounding bone before extraction. This tool helps in reducing the force needed for tooth removal, minimizing trauma to the bone and surrounding tissue.

Key Features:
Blade: The tip or working part of the elevator. It can be straight, curved, or angled depending on the type of elevator.
Handle: Typically wider to allow for a firm grip, enabling better control and force application.
Shank: The connecting part between the handle and the blade, designed to offer strength and precision in manipulating the tooth or root.
Common Types of Root Elevators:
Straight Elevators: These have a straight blade and are used for loosening teeth, particularly in the front of the mouth.
Cryer Elevators: Featuring an angled blade, these are used to remove broken or hard-to-reach roots, especially in the posterior region.
Warwick James Elevators: These have a curved or right-angled blade, commonly used for roots in more challenging positions.
Apical Elevators: These are fine, sharp instruments used for the delicate removal of root tips (apices).
Usage:
The dentist or oral surgeon inserts the blade of the elevator between the tooth and surrounding bone or gum tissue. By applying leverage, the tooth or root is loosened, which facilitates easier extraction using forceps. The elevator allows for precise application of pressure, reducing the risk of fractures or other complications during the procedure.
